Yep. I admit. I’m jealous of Carl’s workshop. I’m particularly jealous of his drill press. Holes in 50 cups? No problem. But the good news is, with a step drill bit even your hand drill will work more efficiently.
The reason for using the step drill is because it was designed to drill holes in thin materials. A regular drill will often catch and rip thin material, especially thin plastic. And the solo cups will also crack if the drill catches.

OMG. The step drill bit is incredible in my hand drill. I can drill 4 cups at a time. Thanks for the tip.
