Hard Cups and Bobby Pins!

Sparkleball friend Carl Boro has astonished me again.  He built this full blue sparkleball —  blue cups and blue lights–  with blue bobby pins!  Carl discovered that long bobby pins are perfect for connecting the 9 oz hard plastic cups.  (Not Solo-style soft cups. They have a raised lip.)   I did a quick google search and found  Durahome, EDI, and Party Essential hard cups on Amazon. My local grocery sometimes has them, and so does Party City.   If you build one, make sure you check out the Hard Cup instruction page.  The Hard Cup formula is different than the Original Sparkleball.

Carl says you’ll need about 126 bobby pins.  Not a big investment.   He also said that the clips slipped a little when he put the lights in, but once that was done, he just straightened the ball out.

What’s Hanging Now – April

20160325_133330 1Spring is a colorful and joyous time. For April, I wanted bright colored sparkleballs, since my dry California yard doesn’t have much springtime bloom
.

I bought cans of spraypaint in flowery shades of pink, yellow, green and blue.Pink Sparkleball  I made four Original Sparkleballs. Before adding lights, I spray-painted the centers of the halves.  Just the center.  (see photo)  Some paint drifted to the sides of the cups, and there were some loose spatters.  All good. But I left  plenty of clear plastic for Yellow Sparkleballsparkle.  I added colored lights, but I think  clear or multi’s would have worked fine.  Voila!  A sparkleball bouquet of color!  Even when they’re not lit.

easter sparkle balls
All the spring festivals of the world are colorful and joyous times, even here in California where spring lasts about a day.  In honor of le sacre du printemps, I offer this easy way to make color sparkleballs.

Make an Original Sparkleball.  Buy a can of spray paint meant for use on plastic.Pink Sparkleball Before you add the lights, spray the center of both sides.  Just the center.  Some paint will drift up to the sides of the cups, and there will be some loose spatters.  All good. But you stillYellow Sparkleball want plenty of clear plastic for sparkle.  When it’s dry, add lights.  I used colored lights, but you can go with standard clear or multi’s.  But the best part is, your sparkleball is colorful even when it’s not lit :)

Star-Spangled

july4_1There are as many ways to make a 4th of July sparkleball as bombs bursting in air or patties on the grill.  I spray-painted cups red, white and blue.  Then I had fun arranging them in red/white stripes and a blue field of white “stars.” 5 It’s not very sparkly, but the colors are bright and festive even when lit.
