Visit to Carl: 2

“The fun part is figuring out the puzzle,” Carl Boro says.   When he saw his first sparkleball at a neighbor’s, it took a while to figure out how to make one.  Once he did, then the puzzle became how to make sparkleballs better.  Better formulas for building the balls.  Better methods for attaching cups and inserting  lights.

In Carl’s workshop, there’s a drill press for making holes in cups. Cases of lights.  A stash of his favorite hard plastic cups, sorted by color.  Giant paperclips.  Tubes of silicon caulk. A cushioned dolly to store the giant New Year’s Eve sparkle ball and plenty of hanging space.

Visiting Carl is one of the most fun things I’ll ever do in my life.

Visit to Carl: 1

I needn’t have worried that we wouldn’t know which house was Carl’s. When Carol and I pulled up, I knew it was going to be a wonderful day.

I have this test by which I measure people.  If they don’t like sparkleballs, then we probably can’t be friends.  And if they do like sparkleballs, then I can forgive just about anything.
